The first time I tapped on a computer keyboard I was hooked. That was the early 1980s when my grade school class was introduced to BASIC. Since then I’ve used all sorts of computers and systems, from airline reservations and cargo manifesting to animation and web development. I’m a huge fan of open source (I have all their albums) and I love keeping old tech running longer than intended. I’m a huge computer science nerd. If you’d like to join me, I’ll be writing here about my projects, studying, experiments and general geekery.
- Why fedora is My Favorite DistroI’ve been running on Fedora for about a month now and so far it’s my favorite distro. I don’t know why I hadn’t seriously tried it before. But now it’s going to be my go-to for any new system I use.
- Never Take Broken for an AnswerWe don’t get rid of tech easily in this house. The last time I upgraded my iPhone was 2020. I used to be right on top of the latest model, but I’ve moved away from that life. These days I’m into keeping tech running and useful for as long as possible. Three years isn’t really… Read more: Never Take Broken for an Answer
- Why Linux Will Never Be MainstreamLinux has come a long way, baby. It used to be a geek’s chore of installing a distro on a machine, then hunting down firmware and software that would work with the hardware. These days it can be as simple as downloading a popular distro and installing it as you would Windows. Okay, I say… Read more: Why Linux Will Never Be Mainstream
- Bash Script for Quick and Easy File Transfer via SSHIn my last post, I covered using the command line to transfer music files to my Raspberry Pi media server. - Managing My Music Files with the Command LineI recently wrote an article for opensource.com, “Why I switched from Apple Music to Jellyfin and Raspberry Pi.” I hope you’ll read that first — or at least skim it — because it’s really fun and you’ll have more context for this post. When managing my digital music collection during the move to Jellyfin, I… Read more: Managing My Music Files with the Command Line
- Leaving the Mac Behind?I’m really itching to get away from all things closed source as much as I can. One of the biggest is Apple. I’ve used Apple products for so long, they’re a huge part of my digital life. They’re easy to use, they just work, and they last a long time. So why do I want… Read more: Leaving the Mac Behind?
- WordPress Post Created Using CLI on a Wyse TerminalOkay, here’s the thing. I’m a geek about retro technology. Whether it’s old printing presses, cars (before computers), laptops, or dumb terminals, it doesn’t matter. I love finding old tech and giving it new life. I’m writing this post on a Wyse terminal. If you don’t know what that is, you can read about them… Read more: WordPress Post Created Using CLI on a Wyse Terminal
- Coding Journey UpdateI first started learning to code in grade school – which is not that strange these days but in 1982 it was pretty groundbreaking. I wrote more about that on my dj-codes site. I started coding again in the early days of the web. I created sites from scratch and tinkered with HTML wherever I… Read more: Coding Journey Update
- How I choose to link my reading listIf you’ve ever checked out my Library page, you’ve seen my reading list. Sometimes everything changes and other times it looks like I take months to read the same book. That’s because sometimes it does. Sometimes I give up on a book that’s not really happening for me. No guilt. I read for pleasure, mostly,… Read more: How I choose to link my reading list
- Messing around with Python and EV3This used to be an embedded tweet. Since I don’t really do twitter anymore, it’s gone. Sorry. But maybe I’ll post about it on dj codes.
